A flywheel is a disk that is mounted on the flange of the crankshaft. The device transmits torque from the engine to the gearbox, and from the starter to the crankshaft. This component reduces vibrations and noise from the transmission when the truck is moving.

Kinds of flywheels for trucks

By the design:

• Solid. Solid discs with a diameter of about 20-50 cm with teeth on the edge. The devices have a simple design and low price. They are usually made of cast iron and are therefore heavy. They ensure efficient operation of the engine at low RPM. Catalogues of manufacturers also include reduced-weight solid flywheels: their weight is lower than that of standard components by about 1.5-2 kg. Such components allow the engine to gain RPMs faster, making the truck accelerate in less time.
• Dual-weight. These are knock-down devices that consist of two disks connected with a spring mechanism. The devices are suitable for trucks with powerful engines, as they perfectly absorb vibrations. They reduce fuel consumption and improve aerodynamics. Their disadvantage is an expensive repair.

Malfunctions and reasons thereto

The service life of the component on the average is 100-150 thousand kilometres of mileage. In some cases, if the truck is carefully operated, this value may reach 200-250 thousand km. The components are made of high-strength cast iron and steel. However, they are subjected to natural wear and require regular maintenance. The main faults include occurrence of defects on the teeth, and cracks in the area where the component is attached to the crankshaft, and thread disruption in the location of clutch casing attachment. In dual-weight models, one of the most common failures is also mechanical damage of the damper springs.

The reason for failure is the wrong maintenance of commercial vehicles, in particular, incomplete pressing of the clutch pedal, and hard braking. Reduced service life of the component may also be the result of overloading the vehicle. Correct operation of dual-weight flywheels may be affected by an insufficient starter motor rotation speed, vibration due to malfunction of the transmission, different compression in the cylinders, and misfiring.

How to detect faults

Failure of the component in a truck, same as in a passenger car, is indicated by vibration when the clutch pedal is pressed, troubled gear shifting, or increased fuel consumption. Exact identification of the failure requires diagnostics. Repair and replacement of the component should be entrusted to specialists at the service station.
