VOLVO FH 12 trucks

The Volvo FH12 tractor units are heavy-duty vehicles that were produced from 1993 until 2005 by the Swedish manufacturer. The maximum allowable weight of most trucks was 40–60 tons. In some countries, a 200 ton version was offered. The vehicles were assembled at the company’s plants in Belgium, Sweden, Australia, the RSA, India, Russia, Brazil, Iran, Egypt. In 1994 the model won the prestigious International Truck of the Year award. The predecessors are the representatives of the F-series that entered the production in 1977.

I generation (1993–2002)

In 1993, the manufacturer presented heavy-duty commercial vehicles that were fitted with cabins made of galvanised steel. They were characterised by high durability but they weighed 30% less in comparison with the preceding model. The aerodynamic characteristics of the vehicles were high, in particular, due to the use of the wing mirrors of a streamline shape and slanted windscreen. In 1995 the model became the world’s first heavy-duty truck equipped with SRS airbags.

The vehicles were equipped with powerful engines with direct fuel injection. The power units were designed according to the latest requirements for the fuel consumption and the amount of emissions. Thanks to that, they could conform to the requirements of the Euro 3 standard introduced in 2000.

The production of the restyled Volvo FH12 started in 1998. They started to use a technology for controlling the main systems of the truck, called TEA (Тruck Electronic Architecture). The dashboard was equipped with an LCD screen which showed the data obtained from these systems in the course of their functioning.

II generation (2002–2005)

In 2002, the second generation of the model debuted. The vehicle was available in two, three and four-axle versions with the following axle configurations: 4 × 2, 6 × 2, 6 × 4, 8 × 2, 8 × 4. The manufacturer installed cabins with the length of 2,225 mm and the width of 2,495 mm. They were divided into four types and varied in height (mm):

• a low cabin with a bunk – 1,470;
• a standard cabin with one bunk– 1,710;
• Globetrotter with two bunks – 2,050;
• Globetrotter XL with sleeping accommodation arranged for two people, and additional storage space – 2,200.

The manufacturing company used the D12D-500 power units with two turbochargers. They converted the energy of exhaust gases into mechanical energy. This allowed improving the engine performance and reducing the fuel consumption.
