VOLVO FH 16 trucks

The Volvo FH16 vehicles are heavy-duty trucks with the maximum allowable weight of 44–120 tons. They have been manufactured in Sweden, Belgium, Australia, Brazil, Egypt, Iran, India, the RSA and Russia since 1993. Their predecessor was the FE model.

I generation (1993–2008)

The first Volvo FH16 truck was based on the FH12 model. Its name shows the displacement of the D16A power unit which was installed there. It was 16 litres. In comparison with the predecessor, the aerodynamics of the cabin had been greatly improved due to its reduced weight. The following axle configurations were used: 4 × 2 and 6 × 4.

In 2002, a restyled model rolled off the production line. It was equipped with an engine with improved cooling and injection systems. Besides, they managed to reduce the level of noise. Tractor units, lumber trucks and tank trucks were available.

II generation (2008–2012)

In particular, the update affected the range of power units. Now they all met the Euro 5 standard. Among the available body styles, there were concrete mixer trucks, cranes and others. The axle configurations could be 4 × 2, 6 × 4, 6 × 2.

Volvo FH16: III generation (2012 - present)

The manufacturer has made the wing mirrors larger, which improved the visibility. Besides, the bumper is now made of 3 mm thick steel and covered with a coat of polypropylene: this enhances the durability. The range of available axle configurations was completed with 8 × 2, 8 × 4, 10 × 4.

Ventilated seats are available as an option; also, leather upholstery can be ordered. The vehicles are equipped with cabins on a four-point suspension. Their width is up to 2,495 and the length is 2,225 mm. There are four kinds of cabins, and they vary in height (mm):

• SLP — 1,710;
• LSLP — 1,470;
• Globetrotter — 2,050;
• Globetrotter XL — 2,200.

The cabin interior is fitted with one or two bunks, each having the width of up to 880 mm.

The D16K engines the trucks are equipped with are fitted with electronically controlled injectors and also the SCR exhaust aftertreatment system. Due to that, they conform to the Euro 5 standards. While the power units fitted with the Common Rail direct injection system and the SCR and EGR technologies meet the requirements of the Euro 6 standard.

The branded dynamic steering system ensures excellent road-holding ability even when the vehicle is driven at a high speed. It works in combination with the lane departure warning system. In case the vehicle approaches the lane markings accidentally, the truck is quickly brought back to the right course.
