VOLVO FMX trucks

The heavy-duty trucks called Volvo FMX (Forward Control Medium Xtreme) have been produced by the Swedish company Volvo Lastvagnar Aktiebolag since 2010 for the markets in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America and Oceania. The first generation of vehicles has maximum allowable weight from 18 to 48 tons, and the second generation features the MAW of up to 120 tons. The vehicle is based on the FM model and was intended to be used mainly in the construction field.

I generation (2010–2013)

The first Volvo FMX vehicles introduced in 2010 were equipped with the D11 and D13 diesel engines. They were fitted with the EMS system which ensures a precise fuel injection and reduces the fuel consumption. The power units conformed to the Euro 5 standard.

The suspension of the vehicle was designed in the way that it could withstand even extreme loads being driven off-road including construction sites. The available axle configurations were 4 × 4, 6 × 4, 6 × 6, 8 × 4.

II generation (2013 - present)

In 2013, the manufacturer introduced the second generation. Among the exterior features, there is a steel bumper with a polypropylene coating, and bi-Xenon headlights. The new air suspension with self-leveling function provides comfortable driving even if the vehicle is completely loaded. There are four cabins available with the external width of 2,495 mm. They differ in height and length (mm):

• standard (1,570 and 1,970 respectively);
• extended (1,570 and 2,390 respectively);
• with a bunk (1,960 and 2,390);
• double with additional seats (1,590 and 3,300)

The cabin has a great number of compartments for storing things, an electric dryer for clothes and footwear. The bunk is 700 mm wide and is fitted with a 160 mm thick spring mattress. As an additional option, the manufacturer offers armrests. The leather steering wheel is also available.

On the market, there are presented not only Volvo FMX tractor units but also dump trucks, concrete mixer trucks, special vehicles for transporting building materials. The powerful engines of the vehicles are fitted with the EGR system and conform to the Euro 6 emission standards.

The manufacturer equips these commercial vehicles with the Dynamic Steering system which includes hydraulic and electric power steering. The technology ensures excellent road-holding ability at high and low speeds, allows to prevent skidding and unintentional lane changing.
