Brake linings for brake shoes are durable friction elements that come into direct contact with the drum and stop the vehicle in any situation. They are made of composite materials and have arcuate shape. They are attached to a metal plate, the so-called "shoe". Their internal bend repeats the line of the shim, and the outer bending repeats the shape of the drum.

By the manufacturing technology:

• Cold pressing. They are inexpensive and their service life is 60 to 80 thousand km.
• Hot pressing. They have a longer service life (90–100 thousand km) and high price.

Friction linings may be attached to plates in two ways:

• With an adhesive. Such connection is less reliable, therefore it is mainly found in light commercial vehicles.
• With rivets. This type of attachment is intended for heavy loads.

Due to the peculiarities of operation, both front and rear brake linings for drum brake shoes of trucks are subjected to significant loads. Considering rapid natural wear, manufacturers provided the possibility to install a kit of linings separately from the metal plates.

One of the most common reasons of premature or uneven wear of the components is incorrect adjustment of the braking mechanism. If the gap between the shoes and the drum is less than required, there is a possibility of spontaneous braking. This increases the risk of component overheating and reduces its friction properties.

Constant overloading of the vehicle is also detrimental to the components. Due to overloading, braking components are subjected to excessive mechanical and thermal loads, whereby chips and cracks may form on their surface.

You need to prevent ingress of oil and other technical liquids onto the working surface of the brake shoes. This results in slipping and reduces braking efficiency.

The friction element is sometimes torn off the metal plate. Usually this happens when substandard components are installed, or in case of incorrectly performed riveting.

A brake drum has a special windows, closed by plugs for visual monitoring of the components state. Thickness of friction elements is measured with vernier calipers on a daily basis. Sometimes, the components are equipped with wear sensors. When their thickness reduces to the minimum, the sensor sends a signal to the dashboard.

The wear of the friction surface is often indicated by indirect symptoms: squeaking and rattling sound during braking, vehicle deviation from the path, increased braking distance. When these symptoms appear, the entire system should be diagnosed and troubleshooted.
