IVECO Stralis trucks

The Iveco Stralis heavy-duty trucks have been manufactured since 2002. Their gross vehicle weight varies from 18 to 44 tons. In the beginning, the assembly of the vehicles was carried out in Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Australia and China and since 2012 they are assembled in Spain. In 2003 and 2013 the model won the prestigious International Truck of the Year prize which is annually awarded by journalists from 23 countries. In Australia and Brazil, these vehicles are marketed as Powerstar, and Strator - in the Netherlands. It is a successor of the EuroStar and EuroTech models.

Iveco Stralis: the background

The tractor unit was unveiled at the European Road Transport Show in 2002. It became the first long-haul truck in Europe fitted with an automatic transmission as standard.

In 2007, the vehicle received a facelift which resulted, among other things, in an increased number of available cabs. They were:

• AD (Active Day). There was no sleeping berth, it was possible to install a third seat.
• AT (Active Time). These had one or two sleeping berths. There was a space for a fridge under the bed.
• AS (Active Space). A spacious cab fitted with everything necessary for international transportation.

These vehicles came with two and three-axle configuration. They could have the following chassis configurations: 4 × 2, 6 × 2 and 6 × 4.

In 2012, the manufacturer introduced the facelifted model called Iveco Stralis Hi-Way. The exterior received headlights with Xenon bulbs and LED daytime running lights. The manufacturer started to use the Cursor power units that suit the requirements of the Euro 5 emissions standard. Besides, they began installing Euro 6 conforming engines with the Hi-eSCR (efficiency Selective Catalytic Reduction) system for exhaust gas purification.

The new Iveco Stralis XP truck was introduced in 2016 at the International Motor Show in Hanover. Now, the trucks were equipped with cabs for:

• Urban use (Hi-Street). The length was 1660, the width - 2280, the height - 1210 mm.
• Regional transportation (Hi-Road). The length was 2100, the width - 2280, the height - 1210 or 1880 mm. The higher version had two sleeping berths.
• International transportations (Hi-Way). The length was 2215, the width - 2480, the height - 1516 or 1989 mm. They were fitted with one or two sleeping berths.

The vehicle was characterised by an updated engine fitted with an exhaust gas recirculation system Smart EGR. This technology helps to speed up the fuel injection process due to which both the fuel consumption and the amount of harmful emissions are reduced. Besides, the manufacturer sets extended service intervals for commercial vehicles due to which its maintenance is cheaper. The vehicles are fitted with various safety systems: advanced emergency braking system (AEBS), electronic stability program (ESP), lane departure warning system (LDWS), driver attention support (DAS) and others.

The company also manufactured versions running on natural gas: compressed (CNG) or liquefied (LNG). They were called New Stralis NP. The vehicles could cover up to 1,600 km without refuelling.
